About Economic Anthropology


Economic anthropology as a sub field of social anthropology helps to analyze the economic activities of different cultures and societies across the world. This course is designed to enable students to know the most important concepts and issues in economic anthropology. The course deals with theories and ethnographies of economic behavior, institutions, and systems in different societies. This course begins with a brief review of key concepts in anthropology, economics, and economic anthropology. The early debates and theories on economic activities, which are considered to be the underpinning for the emergence of economic anthropology as a sub discipline, will also be discussed. Cross-cultural assessment of economic systems is another concern of this course. The course also focuses on community and economy, trade, money and market, labor organization, consumption, and systems of distribution and exchange.
